While the wife wanted to fly to visit family in eastern Thailand, I decided to have my first international boys trip with my ten-year-old son as he had a few days of school, which only meant missing one day of school for a six-night trip to Phu Quoc, Vietnam. The island is just an hour’s flight from Bangkok.

Phu Quoc, Vietnam, is as close to Cambodia and southeast Thailand as to mainland Vietnam. The island has a special visa exemption status for all foreign visitors staying there for less than thirty days if flying directly into and out of the island.
Phu Quoc is the largest island in Vietnam and is Vietnam’s first island city. The island has a total area of 589 square kilometres and a permanent population of approximately 178000 people. Located in the Gulf of Thailand, the island city of Phu Quoc includes the island proper and 21 smaller islets. Duong Ðông, situated on the island’s west coast, is the island’s administrative centre and most significant town.

4K Drone Videos
With the bright lights of the main road that runs parallel to the beach and the luminous green lights on the offshore boats that attract squid, I just had to do some night droning from the beach resort where we were staying.
Ba Keo Beach:
Ba Keo Beach, located in Duong Dong, spans 135 hectares and is known for its crystal-clear waters, soft white sand, and scenic setting, just 6.7 kilometers from central Duong Dong. Ba Keo Beach offers a stunning sunset experience, with vibrant colors reflecting off the clear waters, creating a picture-perfect moment. Early risers can enjoy peaceful morning walks along the shore, watching fishing boats return with their catch.
Ngoc Hien Pearl Farm:
Even though it is mainly a large showroom with pearl-themed souvenirs and jewelry to purchase, the many guides who gave presentations were appreciated. Many old shells, including giant clam shells, were part of the displays. They will also open an oyster to reveal the pearl plus allow you to view the technician’s room while they are actively working. The Pearl Farm is next to the western side of the International Airport on the West Coast.
Cable Car to Hon Thom Island:
The 7,900-meter-long cable car system sets the world record for “the world’s longest three-wire cable car.” It connects An Thoi to Hon Thom Island via Hon Roi and Hon Dua Islands.
Tickets at the time of writing were 700,000 VND for Adults and 550,000 VND for children. The ride takes about thirty minutes each way.
Sunworld Hon Thom:
Sun World has built the Aquatopia Water Park next to the Hon Thom Island cable car station. With over twenty waterslides and the ticket price included in the cable car’s price, it is a great value. Be sure to take the time to go up and around the 360-degree rotating observatory. The park is divided into six zones and is known as Asia’s leading water park.
Phu Quoc Historical Prison:
Okay, this was a little disappointing. It contained one small room of exhibits, mainly old photos, but the outside prison and guard tower were worth checking out.
Bai Tam Khen Beach:
Khem Beach (known as Bai Khem Beach) is located in An Thoi town, roughly 25km from Duong Dong town. Until 2009, the beach was an out-of-bounds military area. Since 2014, Khem Beach Phu Quoc has been open to tourists. Khem Beach, Vietnam, is honored in the top 50 most beautiful beaches globally based on its untouched beauty, atmosphere, accessibility, sand and water quality, and average annual temperature.
Bai Sao Beach:
Sao Beach (Bai Sao) is a captivating gem on Phu Quoc Island, approximately 25 kilometers south of Duong Dong Town. Renowned for its pristine white sand, crystal-clear turquoise waters, and swaying coconut trees, it offers a serene escape for those seeking to unwind and immerse themselves in the beauty of nature. When you come to Sao Beach, you can participate in many fun activities such as swimming, sunbathing, and playing water sports such as surfing, kayaking, and diving to see the coral reefs. In addition, you can enjoy fresh seafood at restaurants along the beach.
Ho Quoc Pagoda:
The Ho Quoc Pagoda is the largest Buddhist temple on Phu Quoc Island. Officially inaugurated on December 14, 2012, this spectacular temple is perched at the base of a lush mountain that faces the sea and the rising sun. Ho Quoc Pagoda is 18 kilometers from Duong Dong Town and located in Suoi Lon hamlet in Duong To Village. The temple is situated along the eastern coast, overlooking Thailand’s Gulf and just north of Sao Beach.
Dinh Cau Temple:
For more than 300 years, Dinh Cau Temple has contained many interesting and mysterious stories that fishermen have handed down. Dinh Cau is also the symbol of Phu Quoc, where the Sea, Sand, Sun, and Stone are mixed together into a charming landscape.
Dinh Cau is located right in Duong Duong Town, the center of Phu Quoc Island. It is only about a 3-minute walk from Phu Quoc night market. The best time to visit is definitely at sunset.
Duong Ðong Night Market:
The night market in Phu Quoc is open from around 5 PM to midnight daily. It gets busiest between 7 PM and 10 PM, so if you prefer a calmer experience, aim to arrive earlier in the evening.
Phu Quoc night market has more than 100 stalls and is divided into two zones: Zone 1 is located at the beginning of the market and consists of inexpensive food stalls and local carts that sell fresh seafood and dried specialties. Zone 2 is at the end of the market, where you will find reasonably priced souvenir stalls with handicrafts and Phu Quoc pearls. The market is approximately 400 metres in size, and it has many seafood restaurants.
